The Hilton (stayed Fri night)
We were there for a big CELEBRATION!
Concert by a very popular pop star - and he was cute!
Berlino, mascot for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics-Berlin2009, which will be held Aug. 15-23. The mascot was presented on 1.22.09 and there was an online contest for his name, with suggestions coming from 18 countries - including the US!
Holocaust Memorial - "Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe" - all of these 2700 concrete slabs are the same width and length, but different heights and the grounds (located in between East & West Berlin of the Cold War) they are on are wavy. It's really neat to walkthrough, with an underground information center (the artist wouldn't let them build his design without a very discrete underground information booth). This monument was contraversial and involved years of delay, finally opening in May 2004. The stones are all coated in anti-graffiti coating, which was also contraversial - the architect thought graffiti may enhance the memorial - and "later it emerged that the company supplying the agent once manufactured poison gas for use in Nazi death camps" (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4531669.stm)
